Paraty

Phase 2 of our journey is complete. We have just spent 4 glorious days in the very beautiful paraty. We arrived on Saturday afternoon. The bus journey from rio was very comfortable. I can honestly say that, in my very nearly 27 years, I have never seen as many trees as I saw in that 4 and a half hours. Brazil is so beautiful!

We ambled around the colonial town of Paraty in the afternoon. It was much more relaxed than rio. The cobble streets are more like boulder streets! Very difficult to walk on in flip flops with blisters. There are loads of little quirky shops. It is only a small town, about the same size as Crediton (or Builth Wells for you welshies), so I find it hard understand why they need about 10 chemists?! In the evening we walked down to the seafront and had a Paraty

Rio de Janeiro

We arrived on Wednesday. The first thing I saw after leaving the airport was a pig roaming the streets, very random! The locals didn’t seem to even notice. Now I realise that it’s quite normal in this city. Have seen loose horses roaming around too.

We booked a hostel in favela do babilonia and I am so glad we did! It’s a small favela in the leme area, next to copocabana. We had read that this favela was safe and friendly, which it is!

We arrived at the hostel surviving Wills crazy Brazilian style driving. I didn’t think it was possible for the roads to be any crazier than in Spain but they are and we aren’t even in bolivia yet!

Headed down to the beach in the afternoon. Way too hot for our little white, English bods (37 degrees) so we didn’t stay in the sun too long. Rio de Janeiro

A small Favela in Rio de Janeiro

We have had a really nice couple of days in Rio. We spent Thursday morning walking around centro, it has lots of little streets with bars, shops etc. We also wanted to try and find the long distance bus station which we eventually did with the assistance of a English speaking lady who suggested we get a bus to the stations location. I could tell by looking at her that what she was really trying to say was that you two look like a pair of green easy to rip off travellers, she did not word it like this however. I don’t know what it is a bout Rio but it is not an easy place to orientate your self, i think its size has something to do with it. The city is vast and did not seem to make and sense to me.
