Swimming with Sea Lions in the Galapagos

I have just returned from the Galapagos islands after spending 7 days their and what a truly amazing 7 days they where. When we where planning our trip to south America the Galapagos islands where something that we gave alot of thought, the reason being that it costs the same for one week as a months travel and lets face it were all on a budget. Having now been to the Galapagos islands I am so glad we decided to do it.

We booked a 9 day tour with gap adventures, 3 days on a boat cruze and 3 on Isabella island. We thought having a little mix would enable us to really see what the golapagos was like. It was truly amazing, being surrounded by so much wildlife and being able to get so close, it’s a truly unique and magical place. As I am unable to upload Swimming with Sea Lions in the Galapagos

Helping dogs as a Volunteer in Iquitos, Peru

After writing the last couple of posts I realised I should probably tell you a bit about the project we are volunteering for. I am intending to post about the boat trip from Yurimaguas to Iquitos in the near future too as we could find limited information about it, what we did find made it sound like it was difficult, this was not our experience. The reason I did not want to write about the volunteer project initially was that it was a little daunting trying to fit it all into one post, and i was excited about catching street dogs. I don’t find writing that easy and I just really wanted to get something onto the web. For this reason you may also come across hideous grammar and a few typing mistakes, I wish I could put this down to writing my posts on an iPod but in Helping dogs as a Volunteer in Iquitos, Peru

Catching Dogs on the streets of Iquitos

And I thought catching street dogs in Iquitos was going to be challenging. To a degree it is, catching any animal can be tricky, what makes it so much easier on the streets of Iquitos is that there are just so many animals to choose from. Myself and Kat are taking two weeks out of what feels like a busy travelling schedule to work for amazon cares in Iquitos, northern Peru. It’s something that kat is able to do easily due to her Veterinary experience and for a keen animal lover like me I was shore I would have no problem helping out, it’s also a great chance to take some time doing something a little different.

The main job of the 8 volunteers during our two week stay in the northern jungle is to de-sex and provide preventive medication for as many dogs and cats (primarily dogs) as Catching Dogs on the streets of Iquitos

Pantanal and Bonito

Hello Again,

So this week has been a bit of a hectic one. Well at least it feels like it, we are both shattered. We arrived in campo grande a week ago and decided to spend a day taking advantage of the free computers, uploading all of our photos. We went out to get lunch and ended up in a Brazilian families living room/cafe eating beans, boiled rice, scrambled egg and raw cabbage?! It was an interesting experience but it only cost 12 reals so about 4 pounds, for both of us.

On wednesday we set off on our pantanal tour with ecological expeditions (not recommended!). We were told it was a 4 hour bus journey but in actual fact it took us 7 hours to get to camp. We had been sold private camping which turned out to be a shack with about 10 other people. Oh and Pantanal and Bonito

Bonito, fish and crystal clear water

We arrived in bonito after a private transfer organised by ecological expeditions from the pantanal with new short term travel friends nic and Olly. At some point in the future I will follow up a post I wrote along time ago about the people you meet travelling, can’t even remember what I said now. Although I do not want to go into to much detail about the people I meet I like to mention them as this is to remind me in the future. Nick and Olly where great and although did not stay in the same hostel on bonito had drinks and did activities together. Thanks for a fun and entertaining few days.

After the tour of the pantanal we just wanted to takes some time to recover and cill out. Hostel bonito is part of hosteling international and is the best place to if your visiting bonito Bonito, fish and crystal clear water
