Camping in Pembroke, Wales

A weekend away in Pembroke, Wales

Myself and Kat went on a camping trip at the weekend it the first one in a while, apart from Glasto!! (its just round the corner by the way – Very excited) We could not have picked a better weekend to go. The weather was fantastic.Up the coast in pembroke, near st davids

We have been wanting to go and have a bit more of a look around wales ever since we have been here but can never seem to find the time. That and the fact that here in mid wales is a beautiful place makes it difficult to get away. We settle on Pembroke as it is only about an hour and a half drive. We knew the weather was going to be good so we jumped in the car and headed south.

The tour of south west Wales

For us the journey is always part of the adventure, when your in Wales you are in for a treat and if you have time try to make the effort to travel on some back roads. You never know what your going to get and the land scape changes around every turn. On our way across from Builth wells we turned right and headed towards Cardigan where we met the cost. Fabulous windy roads which took us through forested areas and small open ridges. From Cardigan we headed down the cost and on to St Davids. the inland part of the drive was fantastic but the coastal road is about a mile inland and not that spectacular.

St Davids, Pembroke, Wales

St Davids still has that feel that is so familiar to us from many of the towns in mid Wales. Its a cross between quirky and a journey back in time. Their is no big chain supermarket, you cant find the petrol station and there is a picturesque square in the middle of the town. When we arrived their was a small marque in the square selling a range of European food, baked quiches, Tart ou Flet and Paella whee all on the menu. Like a lot of things in wales, this was a real mismatch of cultures, Spanish and French food in a little city on the south wales coast. Due to our love of sea food and being close to the coast we thought fish should be on the menu so we tucked into some paella which was very tasty and definitely the best lunch around.

Another cast, and another . . . .and another. . .

We then had a little walk around the City of St Davids. The usual touristy buzz but without the touristy shops. Quirky little coffee shops and delicatessens selling fresh fruit and veg alongside the niceties in life. A large fishing and tackle shop where I purchased a rod to try my hand at some sea fishing. More on how that went later, clue – that’s a picture of me fishing, not of me holding a whopper!!!

The Bench Bar is a bar come coffee shop come gallery for local artists. Its this kinda place which really sums up st Davids, quirky, relaxed with its own identity. There breakfasts are fantastic to, we did not get a chance to sample their ice cream but I am sure it is yummy. Well worth a visit if your staying the area or even passing through.

Camping next to the Pembroke Coast

It was only a short drive to our camp site. I had spent an hour looking for a place online and then resorted to asking a friend for a recommendation. Boy am i glad i did. Caerfai Bay camp site is slightly more expensive than other is in the area, only by a couple of quid but it is so worth it. The picture below is the view from our tent.caerfai bay, pembroke, wales

As you can see the view was fantastic. After setting up camp we went for a short walk along the coastal path and found what I though was an excellent fishing spot, I was wrong. Spent a couple of hours casting!! Looking on the bright side it game we a chance to chill out in the sun, apart from one other person who left shortly after we arrived we where on our own. Bliss!!  Also spoke to someone on the walk back who was obviously a local, he had not been able to catch anything for a week or so either, that made me feel a little better about myself and my fishing ability!!

Due to the lack of success on the fishing front, we popped back into St Davids to grab some fish and some sausages from the STORE, not a supermarket a STORE. (Time Travel Springs to mind) when we got back to the camp site we relaxed in the sun and BBQ’ed with a bottle of wine and break views of the sea. The end of a very enjoyable day!

Secluded quiet coves and swimming in the clear Pembroke Sea

We awoke on Sunday with the sun shining. After chilling out and heading into town for breakfast we took a walk along the coastal path. The coastal path winds its way along the cliff edges and after every turn their are more fabulous views of the coast line. For more about the coastal path in take a look at this walking blog I have just been reading. This is what i would call a real coastal path!! We found our selves scrambling down a stream to find a nice quite cove where Kat had a swim in the clearest sea I have ever seen in the UK. You could actually see the bottom in 2 meters of water, certainly not like the channel or any of the Devon beaches I am used to. The water was a little fresh, to be expected this time of yea really but when the sun is so hot it can be nice to take a dip, I chose just to have a dip with my feet!!

Beach in pembroke

We then took a drive down to the south coast. I don’t really have a lot to say about it really. More people, more touristy and a decisively murky sea. We ventured that way to see if we would like to return in the future, we certainly will not be heading that way when we return to pembroke. If you want to experience quiet beaches, nice coastal paths and quirky little towns head to the area around St Davids, we will definitely be going back!
